Digital X-Rays in Eagle River

At Alpine Family Dentistry in Eagle River, AK, we use digital x-rays to help diagnose and treat your dental problems. When it comes to evaluating your oral health, x-rays are a valuable tool. With x-rays of your teeth, your dentist can see what’s below the surface, getting a full picture of your oral health.

Why Are X-Rays Important?dentist and hygienist looking at children's xray

Dental x-rays let your dentist look into areas they would not be able to see otherwise, like inside your teeth. Without dental x-rays, your dentist won’t be able to evaluate or treat your oral health as well as they could with the complete view that x-rays offer.

Dental problems often found on dental x-rays include:

  • Tooth decay in hidden areas, like between your teeth or under a filling
  • Jaw bone issues
  • Tooth position, which becomes important when planning for braces, dentures, or other dental wear
  • Tooth abscesses
  • Broken roots
  • Infection
  • Hidden tartar

If you haven’t had an x-ray in a while, your dentist may recommend a panoramic x-ray so he or she can get a better idea of your overall oral health.

Types of X-Rays

In our dental office, Dr. Brett Kocherhans and his dental team use digital x-rays during your appointments to provide you with the most thorough exam possible.

During your first appointment, our dental team will take panoramic x-rays of your teeth. With panoramic x-rays, the x-ray machine rotates all the way around your head, giving your dentist a full view of your dental situation. Panoramic x-rays are fast and easy for patients. You simply have to stand or sit still while the machine circles your head and creates the x-ray images.

Panoramic x-rays are a great way for your dentist to look for any pathology in your tooth or bone.

If Dr. Brett notices any dental issues on your x-rays, he will show the issues to you and discuss possible treatment options.

Digital X-Rays

Most dental exams include x-rays. Digital x-rays allow Dr. Brett and his dental team to get an inside look at your teeth and dental issues, which aids in diagnosis and treatment. Specifically, x-rays are great for finding areas of bone loss or decay in your teeth, which may be hidden beneath fillings or deep in your tooth, where the dentist wouldn't be able to see it with just a visual exam.

Other dental problems digital x-rays can help diagnose include:

  • Bone loss in your jaw
  • Cysts and tumors
  • Abscesses
  • Impacted teeth
  • Wisdom teeth issues

Digital x-rays allow Dr. Brett to see how your teeth are positioned, which is also helpful when it comes to preparing for tooth extraction, a root canal, or other dental procedures.

If you have any questions about having digital x-rays taken, please let our friendly dental staff know. We are happy to address concerns and answer questions when it comes to x-ray technology. At Alpine Family Dentistry, we want you to enjoy the best oral health possible, and we can help you keep your teeth and gums healthier with digital x-rays.

3-D Cone Beam Imaging

We use dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), an advanced x-ray technology, in our Eagle River dental office. With 3-D cone beam technology, we can take hundreds of high-quality 3-D images with just one scan of your mouth.

Why Are 3-D Images Useful?

With 3-D images of your mouth, we can evaluate your oral health more thoroughly. The 3-D images allow us to closely examine your soft tissue and bone, which helps diagnose and treat your dental issues. 3-D x-rays are useful in a variety of situations. Whether Dr. Brett is evaluating your jaw area for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or preparing your tooth for a root canal, the 3-D images created by the dental cone beam CT will help him get the most accurate and in-depth view of your dental situation.

A full scan can usually be completed in under a minute, making the process quick and easy for our patients. This technology is one of the most advanced dental technologies we offer in our dental office. We love using 3-D images to help our patients improve and protect their smiles!
