Dental X-Rays

Most dental exams include periodic dental x-rays. Modern digital x-rays are more comfortable, precise, and efficient than ever, which is why Dr. Brett and our team at Alpine Family Dentistry use them. Many of our patients have questions about x-ray technology, so we compiled a list of them.

Here’s what you need to know about dental x-rays in Eagle River.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes, dental x-rays are safe, especially digital x-rays. Digital dental x-rays have an even lower emission of radiation than traditional x-rays. To keep our patients safe, we take extra precautions, like only using up-to-date techniques and equipment, taking x-rays based on the specific patient’s needs, using protective shields as needed, and using safe exposure times.

For some perspective, a single digital x-ray emits 0.1mrem of radiation, and a set of 4 bitewings emits 0.4mrem. On the other hand, natural radiation from soil has 35mrem per year; drinking water has 5mrem per year; using natural gas for cooking has 9mrem per year; and a transcontinental flight has 2–4mrem.

Overall, dental x-rays are safe and often emit less radiation than many other things in our daily lives.

How Often Should X-Rays Be Taken?

We generally take x-rays once a year to monitor your oral health and detect areas of decay that aren’t visible with a standard visual exam.

How Are Digital Dental X-Rays Taken?

Digital dental x-rays use a sensor that patients bite to hold their position. The sensor transmits the images to our computer so we can view the x-rays immediately.

What Do Dental X-Rays Show?

At Alpine Family Dentistry, Dr. Brett and our team use digital radiography to get a detailed, inside view of your smile. Not only does this help us devise more specific treatments, but it also allows us to identify and diagnose potential concerns in the early stages.

With dental x-rays, we can see, diagnose, or treat the following:

  • Tooth positioning
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Bone loss in the jaw
  • Tumors and cysts
  • Abscesses
  • Impacted teeth
  • Wisdom teeth issues

X-rays help us with tooth extractions, root canal therapy, implant dentistry, and orthodontics. Ultimately, dental x-rays allow us to keep your mouth healthy and beautiful!
