How Can I Make My Child More Comfortable at the Dentist?

Visiting the dentist can be scary, especially for little ones! But, the good news is that there are several things parents can do to prepare for children's dentistry in Chugiak and to ensure their kids have the most pleasant experience possible.

#1 Prepare Ahead of Time

Start talking about your child's dental visit before it happens. You can read stories about the dentist or color some pictures together to prepare them. Talking positively about the dentist will help them feel comfortable and excited about their appointment.

#2 Make It Fun

Offer your little one an incentive for a cavity-free checkup to make visiting the dentist more fun. Maybe a fun activity together afterward or a special treat.

#3 Create Good Oral Health Habits at Home

Please help your child brush and floss their teeth and teach them the proper techniques to have a good home care routine. They will need supervision with brushing and flossing until they're at least seven or eight years old.

#4 Lead By Example

Let your little one see you brushing and flossing your teeth at home, demonstrating proper techniques. You might also bring them along to your own dental visits so they can get a feel for what their own appointments might be like.

First Dental Visits at Alpine Family Dentistry

Dr. Brett in Chugiak and The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both agree that children should start seeing their dentist as soon as their first teeth arrive, or at least by their first birthday. If your baby is coming in for their first visit, we'll spend some time counting their teeth and acclimating them to the 'big" dental chair while they sit on your lap. It's a great time to ask Dr. Brett questions about your little one's oral health. We won't incorporate teeth cleanings or any other procedures until they're older and more comfortable in the dental chair.
